Training of Training of Teachers (ToTs /Resource Persons (RPs) 2018-19
SCERT received a letter from Nagaland Education Mission Society – Samagra Shiksha vide letter NO.SSA/NAGA/RPs/ToTs/2017-18 dated 7th February 2019 to organise a Training programme for Resource Persons/Trainer of Teachers (TOTs) 2018-19 from 12th – 16th March 2019 at SCERT Nagaland.
A total of 124 TOTs from 46 EBRCs participated in the 5 days training programme. The facilitators consisted of 15 Resource persons from SCERT and Dr. Shatarupa Palit from North East Regional Institute of Education (NERIE), Shillong. The participants were introduced to the following topics:
- Code of Professional Ethics for Teachers: It is universally felt that the status of teaching profession requires to be raised to ensure its dignity and integrity. Accordingly, it is considered necessary that there should be a code of ethics which may be evolved by the teaching community itself for its guidance. It consists of a Preamble and 5 major areas of professional activities.
- Part I – Teacher in relation to Students
- Part II – Teacher in relation to Parents/Guardians
- Part III – Teacher in relation to Society and Nation
- Part IV – Teacher in relation to Profession, Colleagues and other Professional Organization
- Part V – Teacher in relation to Management/ Administration
- Child Psychology: The topic on Child Psychology was introduced to enable the TOTs to understand the basic concept of Psychology, Educational Psychology and how they are integrated to understand the psychology of children. Understanding of the Stages of Child development especially in the area of Physical, Mental, Emotional and Social Development during the Early, Later Childhood and Adolescence were highlighted. Activities were also conducted to understand the different stages in Child Development.
- Constructivism: This is the latest catchword in educational circle, applied both to the learning theory and epistemology- both to how people learn and the nature of knowledge. The term constructivism refers to the idea that individuals, through their interaction with the environment, construct their own knowledge and meaning. It is centred on the idea that human knowledge and learning is actively constructed by the learner, not passively received from the environment. It is created or constructed by the individual through his or her own experience. This approach was introduced to the participants so that they will be aware of the new methods and approaches in the field of Education. Video presentations were also shown to the participants have a concept clarity.
- Learning Outcomes: The focus of the school education system has shifted from increasing access to education to ensuring quality learning. As a part of this shift, the NCERT, under the directive of the MHRD, has brought out Learning Outcomes at the Elementary Stage of schooling. The rationale behind Learning Outcomes is that they can be used by stakeholders at both micro and macro levels to provide insights into the progression of a child’s learning in various classes. The reason for taking up this topic was to:
- Introduce the concept of Learning Outcomes to the TOTs.
- Highlight the necessity of shifting the focus from
- Quantity towards quality in education and
- A teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered classroom.
- Orient the TOTs on various pedagogical processes so that the teaching-learning process can be oriented towards achieving learning outcomes.
- Create exemplars for all the subjects (English, EVS, Social Science, Mathematics and Science) keeping the local context in mind to achieve learning outcomes. Accordingly, subject experts introduced the concept of:
- Learning Outcomes in Early Childhood
- Learning Outcomes on EVS/Social Sciences
- Learning Outcomes on English
- Learning Outcomes on Mathematics
- Learning Outcomes on Science
The sessions were conducted through lecture method, group discussion, group activities, interactive sessions, presentations with the help of audio-video aids. On the concluding day, Director, School Education and Director, SCERT encouraged the participants to be proactive and to take their responsibilities sincerely.
